GoPro drone woes leading to 200-300 job cuts, says TechCrunch
The karma has been bad in GoPro‘s drone division, which may see cuts of 200-300 employees this week, according to a report in TechCrunch. The sobering news follows a series of high-profile setbacks for the action-camera maker, who has struggled to diversify into drones, VR and entertainment. Its Karma quadcopter drone was pulled from the market after technical problems arose, to be reintroduced in last February.
In 2016, the company laid off 100 from its entertainment division, followed by another 270-person reduction in 2017.
According to the TechCrunch report, the employees will be kept on the payroll through mid-February (after CES).
GoPro has struggled to capture the success in the drone space it enjoys in the now-crowded action-camera market. One-time partner DJI Global has had significant success with its Phantom, Mavik Pro and Spark series.
